Work PLACE readiness skills

ReadinessBe a part of the next-generation work force

A successful internship depends on the student having a solid grounding in the skills described below

Academic skills

Communications — Is proficient in written and verbal communication. Able to listen effectively and speak and write clearly.

Reading and comprehension — Has a command of the English language, which is essential for required work-place tasks such as reading, interpreting, and maintaining documentation such as route cards, process instructions, and prints and schematics.

Computer — Understands social, legal, and ethical responsibility when using computers in the work place. Knows fundamental computer tasks such as sending and receiving e-mails. Is able to learn to create Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and Word documents and input and retrieve data using various software tools.

Basic math — Has strong skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Familiarity with algebra is a plus. Examples of how math is used in our work place include interpreting drawing dimensions, chemical mixing ratios, and reconciling weekly hours worked.

Applied skills

Critical thinking and problem solving — Is able to translate knowledge into action, analyze information for organization, and apply knowledge to carry out tasks.

Execution — Knows how to get things done in a team environment. Is able to focus on and perform work-place tasks.

Soft skills

Work ethic — Possesses motivation and drive; can understand and comply with work-place policies and practices, has realistic expectations about what is required; performs job in a way that reflects well on the company.

Conduct — Displays appropriate work-place etiquette and behavior; possesses a positive attitude and aptitude to learn.

Interpersonal skills — Works well with others, treating them with dignity and respect.

Attendance — Arrives at work on time every day. Notifies supervisor when going to be late or absent.

Life-long learner — Has a blend of academics and attitude critical to the ever-changing work place. Resourceful in solving problems and engages in learning on the job. Has the capacity to find resources, engage in problem-solving, and incorporate learning into self-directed growth on the job.
